Fire and Rescue Service Stress Competent Providers should be used if required for your fire risk assessment
Monday 17th September 2018
If you do not feel 100% confident to fulfil your fire risk assessment duties, a competent provider should be used.
During Business Safety Week, on Friday 14th September, Warwickshire Fire and Rescue service ran a live stream and Q&A on their Facebook page.
Whilst discussing performing your fire risk assessment, Fire Protection Officer Daryl Townsend stated that although you can complete this assessment yourself, that having a competent provider who holds UKAS accredited third party certification is the stronger option to ensure you comply with fire safety legislation:
“I can’t emphasize enough, having a competent person carry this out is by far better than doing it yourself … If you do have somebody in to do it we were talking and emphasizing the word competent, there are various third-party accreditation schemes that you can find - generally speaking on the internet, one of which is BAFE … sitting underneath the UKAS accreditation scheme system.”
The BAFE scheme Daryl Townsend is referring to is the BAFE Life Safety Fire Risk Assessment (SP205) scheme. If you require assistance with your fire risk assessment you can find a BAFE registered company third party certificated to this scheme using the free search tool available here.
Signing off the live stream, they urged viewers to review their fire safety policies:
“We would ask that you take a little bit of time to look at your place of work, the buildings you manage (or own) and think about fire safety, what it means and how you can ensure the safety of your staff, your colleagues, your business and the public.”
A recording of the live stream can be watched on the Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service Facebook page:
