BAFE welcomes SFRS and NFUS farm fire awareness campaign
Tuesday 8th March 2016
BAFE welcomes the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and National Farmers Union Scotland’s recently launched joint initiative regarding fire safety.
Stephen Adams (Chief Executive of BAFE) and Douglas Barnett (Chairman) welcomed the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) and National Farmers Union Scotland’s recently launched joint initiative regarding fire safety.
This initiative, currently being piloted in South Lanarkshire and Dumfries and Galloway regions, is to assess fire risks in rural areas. This is due to rising numbers of farm fires in Scotland from 2013-2015, destroying whole buildings which can greatly affect farming livelihoods.
“Many of us think of farms as homes which they are of course but they are primarily businesses” Stephen Adams stated.
“BAFE would like to see this excellent effort spread out across Scotland to dramatically reduce the number of serious fires.”
But it is not just farms that are at risk. Every business needs a fire risk assessment. BAFE believes that the Scottish Government should lead an awareness campaign as the SFRS cannot do all this by itself. The Scottish Government in co-operation with CoSLA (Convention of Scottish Local Authorities) should ask local authorities to use an insert into businessrates bills to get the message out.
BAFE also wants to see third party certification of fire risk assessors. A fire risk assessment that has been incompetently carried out is almost worse than no assessment at all. Duty Holders who bear the liability ought to be assured that when they get an assessment it is fit for purpose and can be relied upon. At present this is not always the case.
BAFE have developed a scheme for companies who perform the important and vital task of fire risk assessments (SP205). BAFE would like to see the Scottish Government acknowledge the need for third party certification in this line of work to ensure safety for all businesses throughout Scotland and the UK. Third party certified fire risk assessors offer peace of mind and ensure you are providing a safe environment to work in.
