Both BAFE and FireQual are deeply saddened to hear about the death of John Pownall, non-executive director of BAFE.

John was a former Managing Director and Business Leader which included work as VP Central Europe, MD of German Operations as well as controlling French, Dutch and other European activities. He joined the BAFE Board in 2017 and his substantial support and guidance to the finance and executive teams over the last 8 years has been invaluable in the development of BAFE and FireQual.

Justin Maltby-Smith, Group Chief Executive Officer of BAFE, commented, “John was a gentleman and somebody that I really enjoyed being around. He was a highly intelligent man with a great sense of humour that would always put you at ease regardless of the situation. His support and dedication for BAFE and the fire safety industry will be sadly missed. I am personally grateful to John for all of the support and advice that he gave to me, and for his friendship. My thoughts and deepest condolences are with his wife and family at this incredibly sad time.”

Douglas Barnett, Chair of BAFE, added, “John contributed greatly to the development of BAFE in recent years providing guidance and council from his decades of experience gained across the sector and will be solely missed. My condolences go to John’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

Lewis Ramsay, Chair of FireQual, stated, “‘I was deeply saddened by the news of John’s passing, and I offer my most sincere condolences to his family and friends. He was one of the sector’s most terrific champions and his wise counsel and steady influence will be greatly missed by us all.”
