BAFE Adopted Schemes
MP103 Manufacture of Fire Blankets
In common with the other BAFE schemes for manufacture of products, Fire Blankets also have to be tested to a relevant standard, in this case it is BS EN 1869.
The construction of the blanket is tested via a series of performance based criteria and if they are successfully completed the accredited testing body (typically BSI) will allow the use of there product mark. It is at this time that organisations are recognised by BAFE and can place the BAFE mark on their products.
Fire blankets are typically used in kitchens to put out cooking oil fires, there has been much written about how effective they are in combating fire in these situations and comparisons have been drawn with wet tea towels. To my knowledge BSI have not yet approved any tea towels to BS EN 1869 and BAFE have certainly not listed any in their register!!
Until that time comes it is clear, that product tested and approved fire blankets will provide confidence to users that they are fit for the purpose.
